We are moving

It has started!
The fitout of the new gallery space has begun, see the image above of the new gallery space, as it looks today early March.
We can now finally give you some dates, now that the fitout has begun and we have an estimate of when the work will be complete.
The fitout is estimated to be complete by around mid April.
There’s also a couple of public holidays in that time, what with the upcoming long weekend then Easter in early April, so it’s quite possible it could be late April or even early May, before the fitout is fully completed.
We will be closed from 6th April to 5th June to allow time for the move, the building fit‑out, and the installation of our next exhibition before reopening.
The current hanging system is also being reused at the new gallery space, so we wouldn’t be able to have another exhibition during the fitout due to this.
The closure period also includes a buffer in case any part of the fit‑out runs longer than expected.
We are also taking this opportunity to introduce a new barcode system for artworks and gift shop items.
Volunteers will simply scan an item and its price will appear automatically, no more manual entry into Square, and no more green folder.
Artists don’t need to worry about any extra steps. Louise and Anna will enter all artworks into the system, both gift shop items and exhibition artworks.
IMPORTANT re gift shop items, please note that until an artwork has been entered into the new barcode system it cannot go on sale or on display or be sold.
So artists won’t be able to switch items over themselves, they will need to wait for it to be scanned into the system and the same applies to removing artworks, they will need to be scanned out of the system.
Why are we switching to a barcode system?
Because the council have offered to sell items from the gallery which means we can be open 7 days, even when we don’t have a volunteer on duty (unless it’s a weekend when council can’t assist). It isn’t however feasible for council staff to cross off items in the green book, write out a paper receipt and note on a day sheet every sale.
What will change when I drop off artworks for exhibitions or the gift shop?
You will need to ensure that every item you drop off has all your details on it, you can still use the consignment form for the gift shop (which will be updated slightly) but you won’t need to create a code for each item, just tell us the name of it and the price. If it’s an artwork for an exhibition then you still just fill out the label that goes on the back of each artwork, and we will do the rest.
How will you track the sales of my artworks?
With the new barcode system, each artwork will be in the system and when scanned by the barcode reader, it will show up on the system and show on the reader, making it easier to make sales. A receipt will also be printed out by a new receipt printer, meaning you will no longer need to fill out paper receipts by hand.
How will I know how to use this new system?
We will be conducting short training sessions for all volunteers to attend, prior to reopening. The gallery handbook with instructions will also be thoroughly updated.
Dates for short training sessions will be advised nearer to the time.
Remind me again - why is the gallery moving?
Because our current lease at the current premises was due to expire next year in March 2027 (it was a 5 year lease) and the lease says it will NOT be renewed. If we had not have agreed to move we would not have had anywhere to go next year in March.
How long does our new lease at the new premises run for?
It runs until March 2032, so another 6 years.
I’ve still got questions.
Please email us at art@gawlergallery.com.au or call Louise - we want to make sure you are comfortable with everything and ensure that you are in the loop.
REOPENING of the gallery at the new location.
There will be a GRAND OPENING - 6pm on Friday the 5th of June

The Council Admin Building 43 High St Gawler. Directly behind Fasta Pasta.
