​The Julia Mannix Photography Prize

​​​The Julia Mannix Photography Prize is an annual photography competition held in June at
the Gawler Community Gallery.

The prize commemorates Julia Mannix, a respected local artist and educator who initiated an annual photography exhibition at the gallery, laying the foundation for what later became this prize.
Entries for the 2026 prize will open in early March. 

Who was Julia Mannix?
Julia Mannix was a beloved Gawler-based artist, teacher and founding member of the
Gawler Community Gallery. She is remembered for her passion for art education and her
significant contribution to the local creative community. Julia passed away in 2016 at the
age of just 59.

Julia was both a practicing artist and a teacher, dedicating her life to nurturing creativity in
others. As a foundation member of the Gawler Community Gallery, she played a key role in
establishing it as a hub for local artists.

Julia is remembered not only for her artistic skill, but also for her warmth, generosity and dedication to fostering creativity in Gawler and beyond.
With a particular passion for photography, Julia initiated an annual photography exhibition at
the gallery.

This exhibition later has evolved into The Julia Mannix Photography Prize, which continues to celebrate photographic excellence in and her memory.


Legacy
Julia’s work and teaching reflected a deep commitment to community engagement and
artistic development.

Her influence continues through The Julia Mannix Photography Prize,
which showcases the talent of photographers across the region and keeps her vision alive.
A retrospective exhibition of her work was held at the Gawler Civic Centre in 2021,
highlighting her creative journey and lasting impact on the local arts scene.
